Chef has developed a set of best practices that this cookbook does not yet implement. Refactor the cookbook with an emphasis in:

Idempotent - Should be able to run the cookbook as many times as you want without any concerns.
Declarative - Use chef declarative dsl as much as possible. Use dropping into scripted Ruby as little as possible.
