Decouple conflict handling from inotify implementation #7

The client is currently too reliant on the inotify implementation's behavior.

This isn't absolutely critical for the first release (since it'll be an alpha anyway), so I'm putting it off until 0.02. I'd rather release earlier and get some input on this anyway.
