It was just always something I was bound to do, really. I did a lot of web work growing up, and then kept doing it all through CMU. I could have very easily ended up at a boring big company job, but lucked out with a startup in the Bay Area. I've been hoping to make it back CMU in February or March or so and talk more on this... I don't think CMU does as good of a job as they could in terms of making it clear how awesome it is to work for small companies, startups, and on the west coast.
In terms of GitHub, @defunkt tweeted about wanting someone with Ruby and Java experience. I knew Ruby and kind of sort of maybe a little knew some Java from 15-100, 15-200, and Good-Tutorials, so I replied, they interviewed me, and hired me.
Good work on MISM; always sounded like a steal when I was there. Kind of regret not doing that myself.
