Improved the Walker Lake notebook #8

Closed jlstevens closed 6 years ago

jlstevens commented 6 years ago

This PR improves the Walker Lake notebook in quite a few ways and replaces the original version with a notebook cleared of output. @ebo If this improved notebook is missing anything important you wanted to keep from the original, please tell me and I'll make sure to include it. The original notebook can be found here.

The diffs look good, though they had to be done outside this PR because the original notebook wasn't cleared. Merging.

BTW, my spell checker broke after a recent upgrade. Sorry if I miss any...

Not sure the best venue for these types of comments BUT the author for the Nature paper on the dissapearing lakes (which is related to the Lake Walker study) sent me the data for the lake volumns. So we should be able to fully replicate one or more of the graphics in the paper, and have them vet the results for scientific accuracy and relevance. I will verify with everyone that we can release the data as well as the graphs, but that is my understanding that we can (at least that is how I asked). We will need to cite a few more papers and people for providing the data, but this is a good thing. I was surprised that they could share some of it given how contentious data of this type can be -- for those not in the know, there have been dozens of legal battles between states over water use and water rights, and I have worked in places in Africa where wars have literlly been fought over water use. This data can be highly sensitive.

More later!
