PatternGenerator: draw pattern into supplied array #12

At the moment, we can't even control the type of the array returned by PatternGenerators (leading e.g. CF to have to make a copy to set the type).

Ideally, should be able to pass an array to PatternGenerator and have it draw into that array. This could be tricky to achieve, though. (E.g. patternfns would have to be altered to accept an output array.)
