Persistently pairing the desk (https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/101478#issuecomment-1791995903) made this irrelevant.
The problem
The desk controller seems to lose its calibration state, after which the desk can only move down (in a slower-than-usual pace) and does not move up. Only after moving it down to the very bottom, it seems to re-calibrate and becomes correctly working again.
I could not figure out what triggers it, but it seems to sometimes happen after re-pairing the desk (I need to re-pair the desk after every HA restart, as documented in issue https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/101478). I own the desk since multiple years and have never seen this problem before, it started directly after updating to 2023.11 (I also had to frequently re-pair the desk in 2023.10 and didn't experience this problem).
