Unifi - Heavy network usage by integration #109690

The problem

Based on a tcpdump/tshark output, I see A LOT of traffic towards the unifi appliance... I would not expect such amount of traffic for a few entities related to network clients... (I do not use Unifi protect, so not linked to possible camera feeds...).

How can such high amount of traffic be explained ?

Its the amount of data UniFi sends over web socket, its a lot and sent often.

Im contemplating doing a low power mode where the integration just polls every 30 seconds or so.

À lot I can understand, but I would expect that over a websocket the data is highly compressable... On my unifi itself I see fixed interval (close to constant) peaks of 100mbps...that is not "a lot" anymore that is exaggerated. 😅

For a networking company, it almost looks like they don't know what they're doing 😂

On the other hand, do we know what data is being sent over? Does this contain traffic logs, bandwidth utilization, etc ? Their UI interface seems to lag behind, perhaps the unifi integration can offer an extract capability of this data to be used in Grafana... It would allow more fine-grained troubleshooting without relying on Unifi UI...

Yes all data is in clear text, you can enable the debug logging as per the integration instructions and see all web socket messages

I would be very interested in the "low power mode" where you don't monitor all that traffic, just poll every (maybe configurable) seconds for current devices connected. (Specifically referring to presence detection, of course.)

Their REST interface allows for this, I believe...I haven't looked recently.

I've added compress to the websocket, lets see if that lowers the data transfer a bit.
