ZHA + SkyConnect Requires Daily Reload for Devices To Respond Despite Showing as Available in HA #93286

The problem

Running SkyConnect on Intel NUC with a large number of Zigbee devices (more details of configure can be found in this thread), but I'm finding bulbs/switches unresponsive to commands daily, yet they're not showing as "unavailable" in the HA UI.

And what's odd is that the unresponsive bulbs are not the ones with the lowest RSSI. Either way, I've found that reloading ZHA causes the unresponsive bulb to respond almost immediately after the integration has been reloaded.

I'm not sure what else I can provide, so I've pulled the diagnostics file (copied below) and have enabled debug logging to see if that might generate something that could be helpful. Do I just need to have an automation configured for daily reboots of the integration?

Having the same problems with zigbee devices since updating home assistant to 2023.5.

I just set up my network a couple of weeks ago, so this has been my experience since migrating from Hue Hub. I'm about to switch back as it's just not sustainable for those who use these devices.

zigbed worked great with 2023.4, just a small hiccup imho

You can drag and drop the file when making a comment. But please leave ZHA running for an hour before doing so, otherwise the debug info won't contain much.

From the time that I posted this bug originally after reloading ZHA, I let the system run with debug logging enabled. 16 minutes ago, I noticed that one of my Zigbee switches that's synced with another light did not go off as it should have. Sure enough, the state of the light is showing correctly in HA, but it's unresponsive to commands either in the UI or via automations. I reloaded ZHA and it worked for a few minutes and then stopped again. It has never showed as Unavailable, but it's not responsive to commands. Here is the diagnostics that I just pulled following this repro. The particular device from this latest occurence (ZBMINIL2) is currently showing -78 RSSI and LQI of 88.

Please let me know what else would be helpful.

And also a notice that Zigbee Channel 11 utilization is at 91.06%, so should I try to change the channel to something like 25?

While I understand this could be a contributor to my issues, it's clearly connecting because if I manually trigger the switch, the status is reflected correctly in HA. Just not the other way around if/when these switches/bulbs become unresponsive.

Connections go two ways: if you can receive but cannot send, this means that there is noise near the coordinator that is preventing it from sending.

I would move your coordinator away from interference sources such as USB 3.0 ports, SSDs, WiFi APs, etc. using a USB extension cable.

If this doesn't work, you can trigger a channel change. This isn't currently exposed in the frontend but you can do with your browser's dev tools by running the following code:

The coordinator (SkyConnect) is connected via a USB 2.0 extension cable away from all sources of interference. It connects through a USB 2.0 powered hub that's plugged into the Intel NUC. It's on my middle level of my home and there are several devices in the mesh network between them. And when I'm experiencing this issue, other nearby devices do not seem to have issues. It's like one device will randomly just stop operating as it should until I do a reload of ZHA.

@puddly I'm not familiar with the browser dev tools here, could you point me in the direction of how to run this? Does it require browser_mod? And just to confirm, this shouldn't require me to re-pair all 50+ devices in my mesh network, correct?

imo the problem is not with connection or channel, more the changes related to zigbee after 4.6. As a lot of other posts mentioned all worked fine untill 5.0, since then zigbee (ZHA with Skyconnect) is not working anymore. Edit: just to proof my theory i installed 4.6 again and all 52 devices work fine, no hangups, no reinstall, all fine. So please have a look at the changelog.

Update for my config, one of my devices (ZBMINIL2) no longer becomes fully responsive after reloading ZHA. It was in a one-way communication with a reported RSSI between -60 and -70, where HA would show status, but not take commands. Reconfiguring the device does not work.

So I finally decided to pull off the switch plates, remove the device from HA, insert a tool to put it in pairing mode, and re-paired it through the nearest repeater. It’s now connected and operational reporting -43 RSSI.

This is a bit like whack-a-mole as I expect to find another device in this state any moment now. However, this one was in this state for multiple days and persisted across reboots. I’ll report back what I see and let me know what else would be helpful from the logs.

If it helps any, I was having HORRIBLE zigbee problem until I downgraded to 2023.4.6. Then suddenly everything cleared up except I can't seem to pair some power plugs I have that used to work and now the interview stage fails. But other than that, my network is back to working the way it should.

For those with SkyConnect with ZHA, have you ever seen devices become "unavailable" in HA?

I just had another instance of a Hue light being unresponsive to commands, but RSSI showed -53 and "last seen" events within seconds of my request to turn it off, but the light would not turn off. As soon as I reloaded ZHA, the light responded as expected. I haven't yet checked to see which other lights are now unresponsive, but I'm really at a loss why the status is not reporting like it does with Z-Wave.

@puddly Just to clarify, I've had debug logging enabled for quite some time via the UI, and I believe this previous post was what I got at the time I reported it from the "Download diagnostics" option in the UI for ZHA. Is this sufficient or do I need to add this information to my configuration.yaml to ensure it pulls the right debug information next time it happens? I have assumed that the "Enable debug logging" option in the UI for ZHA would do this for me without having to add it to the YAML.

This is still an issue and it seems like the only workaround is to continually re-add devices I've already added to resolve until the next time it stops working. Here's what I'm seeing in HA when attempting to turn off a switch that's showing as on.

Hello here, I just switched from Deconz/ConBee II (some minor problems with battery powered devices on my 80-device network often disconnecting), to ZHA with a brand new SkyConnect, and after good results during the day in which I set everything up... it's a mess now (the day after, and even worse today, the 2nd day after installing). Exactly what is described in this thread.

I'm on the very latest Home Assistant, running HassOS in a VM on a fast host; connecting to the SkyConnect via LAN (ser2net on a R.Pi in the centre of the house, wifi and BT off, extension cable used).

Anything I can do to help here? Or should I give up and switch to Zigbee2MQTT.

Problem still exists. Works for about 24 h and needs reboot. Hw: rpi4 Core 2024.1.2 Supervisor 2023.12.0 Operating System 11.3 Frontend 20240104.0
