Not understanding the docs describing device tracker

I do not understand, how I can set up my own device tracker. The documentation describes some abstract examples, but related to a fixed platform. It is not clear, how I could start using my own device tracker or how to use the device_tracker.see service. I have a TTN GPS tracker, which is working fine and constantly updating a deivce with lat and lon values (combined and seprated), but how can I turn these values into a device, which I can track and see on a map or assign to e.g. a car or a dog? So, I would be very happy, if someone could elaborate a little more on the documentation, setup and usage.
