Well damn. I must have beat my head against the wall for 2-3 hours trying to get this figured out when I set up the server, and now I find the answer in 15 minutes of googling. I probably spent twice that long typing up this issue. Supervisor > System > "Host" pane > "IP Address" field > CHANGE button > expand IPv4, select "Static" radio button, and add ",8.8.8.8" in the DNS Servers field. Restart Core, and everything is working.
Surely this is not classified as expected behavior, right?
By default the system should be using the DNS server which your Router provides through DHCP. It seems that whatever your router is providing is not working? Do you know what DNS server your Router is serving through DHCP?
My router is set to use OpenDNS as primary (208.67.222.222) and CloudFlare as secondary (1.1.1.1).
Is this fully reproducible? E.g. when you move back to DHCP, do the problems appear again?
So the Host OS (and hence Docker itself) uses the host system to resolve IP addresses, which uses systemd-resolved
. To access its log, currently access to the Host system via SSH is necessary. You can setup using this how-to: SSH access to the host
On the SSH shell, the following commands are interesting (execute when the system shows the problem):
nmcli g
journalctl -u systemd-resolved -b 0
@reidprichard we did see other reports with that problem, but I wasn't able to reproduce it here.
So if you can still reproduce it, logs from your system would really be appreciated.
Possibly duplicate of #1375
Sorry for the delay here. Been working on some other projects and didn't want to mess with HA. I reverted to DHCP, restarted Core, and the issue is back. Here's the journalctl log as instructed:

Would it be useful or informative to see if changing back to static, but without the ",8.8.8.8" appended, fixes the issue?
So in this case was host_internet
set to false
in ha network info
? Did name resolution not work on host side?
What is resolvectl query version.home-assistant.io
and just resolvectl
returning?
Would it be useful or informative to see if changing back to static, but without the ",8.8.8.8" appended, fixes the issue?
I'd expect it to behave like DHCP. But yeah that would be another data point.
In both cases (DHCP and static) host_internet
shows true
. I'm afraid my networking knowledge is pretty poor, so I can't comment re: name resolution.

Oh also, I recently changed my router DNS to primary 1.1.1.1 and secondary 1.0.0.1. Not sure if that's pertinent.
You were right - static with just 192.168.1.1
as DNS did not work.
@reidprichard thanks for the tests so far, very much appreciated!
Hm, host_internet
should turn false when you get the Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers"
erros. It could be that the host_internet
value (or the DNS entry to determine it) was cached, especially if you checked shortly after changing to DHCP.
Can you try use 192.168.1.1
as DNS (static with 192.168.1.1
as DNS should be fine for this test) and then execute following commands:
resolvectl log-level debug
resolvectl flush-caches
resolvectl query ghcr.io
journalctl -u systemd-resolved --since "5min ago"
Sorry for not getting back for so long. I totally revamped my HA install (from bare metal to inside a Proxmox VM), which caused some issues with my SSH access into the machine. The in-browser terminal can't copy/paste, so it was impossible to capture the output of those commands. I was hoping to get SSH working again to track this down, but I've since made even MORE changes to my setup (moving my router to pfSense), and this issue seems to have disappeared. I'm guessing the root cause was just some funkiness with my previous router.

When initially configuring Home Assistant a month or two ago, I could not get it working on anything more recent than OS version 4.20. Anything more recent would give me an error like the following:
At the time, I think the most recent version was 6.xx. I'm pretty sure I also tried versions in the 5.xx range, but I can't remember clearly. I don't recall exactly what the error would do, but I know it prevented me from getting Home Assistant working. Anyway, I've been cruising on 4.20 with no issues ever since, but Supervisor started giving me an error that the OS version was going to start causing problems - something about how it integrates with the OS. Anyway, I figured I'd bite the bullet and upgrade. The upgrade went smoothly. Immediately afterward, I went to update several HA addons. For whichever addon I try, I get a version of the above error. I can still access HA and control things, both from the local network and externally. However, I'm reading the issue may be router-related. My router is a Netgear R6220, and I recently updated its firmware (in between first encountering this error and now).
