Atolla's USB 3.0 Hub with Ethernet LAN Port: network not working #1604

Hm, this is a bit confusing as your dmesg is showing ASIX AX88179, but the link shows a Realtek driver. I am really not sure what kind of drivers that devices requires.

We use Linux 5.10, but the driver on that website support LInux only up to 5.6. Besides, we typically don't include random drivers from vendors, but rely on upstream Linux driver support.

Since the device seems working on PopOS, can you check what kernel modules get loaded when plugging in that device? (Plug device out, reboot, use lsmod to get a list of modules without the device, plug-in the device, use lsmod to get a list of modules with the device. From the difference it should be clear what driver PopOS uses).

Also the output of lsusb on PopOS with the device plugged in is helpful. What version of PopOS are you using?

I'm back with my Pop OS! laptop, and I've just started it connected to the atolla device, with network cable connected. I did make sure that I have internet with it. It seems supporting this hardware requires the CONFIG_USB_RTL8152 configuration symbol along with a firmware. I'll have a look at it.

The latest nightly builds have the driver enabled and firmware included. Can you try this build on your hardware? https://os-builds.home-assistant.io/7.0.dev20211102/

Thank you for this, it was far faster than I would imagine. Just a stupid question from a beginner: I guess the only way I can test it is to flash my server again with this version, right? Otherwise, is there a way to chose it from the HA interface?

You can update from the Terminal add-on (make sure to enable Advanced mode in users setting, and install the Terminal add-on). Use the following command:

ha su options --channel dev
ha su reload
ha os update --version=7.0.dev20211102

This should update the version to that version. After doing that, make sure to move back to regular channel, otherwise you will end up with development versions of Supervisor etc.

ha su options --channel stable

Thank you again for your instructions. Just tested it with Home Assistant OS 7.0.dev20211102 and... the device just works now, rock solid. Awesome! Please let me finalize with another newbie question: when this commit will appear in stable channel? My guess is next month release? I will keep my core running this version for now.

Hi Stefan,

Just a feedback after using the Attola device for one week: system became unstable, losing connection after one day, even when using only the USB ports and connected to network by WiFi (not the Eth port from Attola device).

I could not check logs as I had no USB keyboard/monitor in hands to check what was going on when it was unreachable. Connecting or reconnecting Ethernet cable on Attola port didn't help, and I had to reboot the system...

I ended up removing the Attola device and let the server connected on WiFi with my ZigBee antenna directly connected to the USB port: system is now again rock solid, no instabilities since Sunday.
