Reverse local only/remote only post option #1181

Pitch

Sort of an inverse to local only. Prevents your posts from going to the local timeline, but still lets both local and remote followers see them, as well as letting them show up in tags. Useful for shitposts or brain noise that you don't want to spam the local timeline with but still want people to be able to opt in to.

Motivation

CVQCon2022 is a collaborative shitpost that has started about an hour ago as of writing. It is very fun but I have been spamming my local timeline. In future I would like to avoid doing that. This option would allow people to see those posts only in their home or federated timelines, to keep the local timeline for local instance stuff mostly.

i'd like to see this too, if possible. i believe it would be very useful for smaller instances, on par with the frequency of usage that the local-only posting gets

basically, identical to the normal :earth_asia: public posts in all other ways, except hidden from the local timeline

Good summary, puff.

I get the motivation here -- but it would also be Yet Another Toggle for people to track in their heads, and multiplies the number of potential "states" a post can be in (aka where it shows up). That's already really confusing in Mastodon, and approximately 2x as confusing in Hometown, and I don't want to make it 4x confusing by adding another binary toggle...

I'll mull it over though. Maybe there's a solution that's not a toggle that I'm missing here...

Isn't this just "unlisted"?

dariusk commented 1 year ago

@hughrun No because they want it to appear in federated timelines too.
