I don't think this will fully avoid the confusion, though it does stop triggering anyone's == means EQUALS instinct. :)

It might be even better to omit the "$SYMBOL You" bit when there's no relationship between them and you. The directed arrows seem decently self-explanatory, but the undirected edge only makes sense after you stare at it in light of the others.

And once we've done that, I'd push for "(follows you)" and "(followed by you)" instead of the ==> and <== symbols, because those are self-explanatory. The cost would come in any future localization, but we have that "you" in the symbol-version now; to avoid localization there, you'd have to use something like the account's username, which is language-invariant (so "--> @parkr" for example).

To be clear, what I'm suggesting is:

• no relationship: @foo
• you follow: @foo (followed by you)
• they follow: @foo (follows you)
• both follow: @foo (following and followed)

That "both" case suggests a shorter but somewhat more ambiguous "following/followed/following and followed" wording.

I'd like to avoid the verbose option--I think the arrows are mostly clear, and completely learnable. I like switching == for --, and I also like the suggestion to omit completely when there's no relationship.
