Hi,
Regarding the post-boxes, I would politely disagree that they need to be rendered. In many instances (especially in wealthier countries in Europe and in N. America), they are quite numerous and if rendered even at high zoom levels, would draw too much attention to the viewer of the map. We do render the post offices as they can be important points of references and are a public building that could also be used for shelter, etc.
Regarding amenity=phone (I presume you mean amenity=telephone), I would tentatively agree with you although most telephones being used in developing contexts and humanitarian crises are mobile phones.
Yes post boxes aren't that important (still there are less of them than waste bins, at least here in Germany where each post box usually roughly covers a 1km radius). My problem with post boxes right now is that some of them have addr* tags on them, and that leads to house numbers being rendered in their position. See e.g. here where the two extra 16s are a wall mounted post box and a free standing public phone: http://osm.org/go/0GlV~4Ip8?layers=NH&m=
Not sure I can do anything for the "addr:housenumber" being added, and rendered, for post boxes. I wonder if this make sense to be added to a post box, actually, it's not like the post box has a housenumber, but that it's attached to some housenumber. Please someone reopen if you have any suggestion.
I'd assume that public phones (assuming they are still working) are of more interest in a disaster area than e.g. waste baskets? ;)
