Hi Mike,
This came up this week and with the latest changes to the Tasking Manager, we felt like it was very very annoying to have unread messages, and that this step we now much less needed.
If you can live with the extreme wiggle notification we have now then it would be great if we could mark this closed.
Blake,
Thanks for your message and reaching out to me about this issue.. I can only speak about my observations at mapathons and that is that even when participants see they have messages, they don't read them. Perhaps they assume that they are just informational messages rather than important feedback. I have literally come up to a mapper, saw on their tasking manager window that they have messages, said "hey, you have messages", and had them just continue checking out tasks and mapping (I came back later, saw that they still hadn't read their messages, and explained that messages often contain valuable and important feedback). I am open to other solutions, but something is needed so that mappers actually see and read feedback. Regarding being annoying, as an experienced mapper, I get very few messages, so for me it wouldn't be annoying.

@MikeTho16 What is your osm username I will send you some tasking manager messages, just leave them unread and you will see the new behavior i am talking about.
It should be very distracting, hard to not click on to make it stop.
I just want to be sure it is working and that you have seen it recently.
Hi Blake,
My osm user name is "tekim"
I think have seen it, but happy to check it out again. Also, it very well could be that the people I observed are not representative of typical new mappers.
I wonder if we could determine how many unread messages there are where the recipient checked out a task after having received the message?

@MikeTho16 I sent you a couple of the @ mention type of messages from some random task square in some random project
And if you saw two people struggle with it, I assume others do as well.
Blake,
I received both messages, and they contained a link to the task in question.
This is certainly an improvement over the way it used to be. I like the popup in the browser (not sure if that is specific to Chrome). I anticipate hosting some more mapathons after the holidays. I will pay particular attention to see if people have read their messages.

A contributor should be required to at least open their messages (if they have any) before checking out a new task on which to work. This is to make it more likely that they actually read the feedback that has been provided to them by a validator and that they incorporate that feedback into future mapping.
