I acknowledge that each gridded task has a comment section but this has been poorly utilized at best thus far. Further, its design doesn't utilize the inherent power of a threaded discussion format, which has been repeatedly demonstrated both anecdotally and empirically through research to have great benefit in collaborative knowledge exchange, cooperative learning and also community building.
Agreed the ability to notify a user when a message has been posted (exactly as I was right now in order to respond to your comment in a timely manner) is key to creating a workable and effective mapping environment. Current limitations exist with respect to the TM utilizing the OSM Profile Message inbox thus my suggested workaround as discussed in #905 (Embed a discussion forum on map in TM).
I agree @Notoncebut2x
Right now we can only support sending a message to the Tasking Manager's message system, osm message integration would be good, I am not sure they allow that, but they might, I have to double check.
You can also use the @ reference like here in the Tasking Manager to make sure they get a notice in the Tasking Manager
Thank you very much for the feedback, we will work on implementing them. And keep any other comments comming.
As far as I know (unless it changed recently), the OSM API doesn't allow third party application to send messages to their OSM inbox. Please point me to documentation if I'm wrong.
@bgirardot @pgiraud Re: access to OSM API - as I understand it the TM currently authenticates login credentials with the OSM API thus allowing the mapper's edits to be recorded at openstreetmap.org. This is why anyone who wants to contribute to HOT via the TM must first open an account with OSM. However, any other exchange of information via OSM API is not allowed AFAIK.
There are other ways to login to OSM including Open ID but I'm not sure if this would solve the problem of communicating directly with those mapping in the TM.
@pgiraud That is my thinking too, but you can grant different access to different parts of your osm profile, so I was not sure if maybe now you can grant access to the email address portion or the allow to send messages to you.
@bgirardot I think @Notoncebut2x suggestion is because you don't know you receive a message even if someone uses @ unless you come back to the Tasking Manager to check -- it doesn't email you or ping you on your regular OSM page.
Could you opt in to include your email or something when you grant access to the Tasking Manager?

This has been mentioned in #888 and #904.
Each gridded task allows for a comment to be left, however there is currently no notifications to the user who mapped that area that a comment has been left.
To provide the editor with feedback on their work it would be nice if the comment sent a message to their OSM Profile Message inbox (or notified in some other way) so they don't have to go back and chek on their own.
