including seasonal=yes and intermittent=yes for waterways (and highways) #12

rendering seasonal=yes has been ticketed on the HDM-CartoCSS I thought at least one, if not both of these tags were already on the preset, but they aren't.

seasonal=* and intermittent are both used quite a bit.

In terms of usage: intermittent is >600,000 ; seasonal >6,000. A quick look at the taginfo combinations show that 90% of the intermittent=yes tags were from a GNIS/NHD import (a federal govt US dataset) though.

I'm not sure on their usage - I initially had the question here on this talk page, and a user responded on june 12th.. I think I recall @jaakkoh and I had a brief conversation about this a week or 2 ago as well and he can share his insights as well.

My suggestion would be to clarify the usage of the tags on the mailing lists and then see which ones to implement in the preset.

@worldwidewolford - Do you have time for this ?

Hi Will,

For example, you have intermittent rivers in desertic zones of North of Mali. They dont receive water every year.

And you have rivers with a clear seasonal pattern rainy season / dry season.

For highways, I dont know how to interpret the intermittent=yes.

I'm personally a little confused at the difference between intermittent and seasonal (my initial understanding of these tags was that seasonal was just a deprecated tag and they both had same meaning...) - I initially had the question here on this talk page, and a user responded on june 12th.. Discussed this in IRC, intermittent means after a big storm or (multiple), seasonal is based on the time of the year.

I've used only intermittent=yes for streams in northern Kenya that may or may not be wet during the rainy season, depending on the amount (if any) rainfall. But you are saying that seasonal should mainly be used for seasonal rivers & streams in developing countries? In either case, would be great to include whichever is decided, so that it's easier to tag waterways.

Yes, that was my thinking but you raise a great point that for armchair mappers, they will not know if the dry riverstream bed is intermittent or if it is seasonal.

Perhaps include both, with description saying something like "Use intermittent for waterways that receive water only during floods. Use seasonal for waterways that are filled with water during rainy seasons. If you are not sure, use intermittent." ?
