Stretchly in Windows no longer opens: error message "an error ocurred while running Stretchly and it will now quit." #921

Closed Yaminos closed 3 years ago

Yaminos commented 3 years ago

Prerequisites

Description

[Description of the issue]

Operating system: Windows 10 Pro

Steps to Reproduce

  1. [I click the .exe of stretchly]
  2. [The error message shows up and stretchly doesn't open]

Expected behavior: [I expected Stretchly to open like it used to do]

Actual behavior: [The error message appears and stretchly quits]

Reproduces how often: [100%]

Additional Information

I can't access the application to open this log on preferences. It all started after I upgraded from stretchly 15.0 to 16.0 and I tried to modify the preferences log to exclude certain applications. I did it all according to the provided instruction. Now, stretchly won't run anymore. I have re-installed it a dozen of times.

Sorry if I don't provide enough code information, I signed up to github just to report this issue, but I am not a programmer.

I can't find the preferences log in the file location anymore either. I have no clue how to solve it myself. I'd rather keep using stretchly rather than having to use another application for this purpose...

Debug information

You can find extra debugging information and location of Logs file on Preferences -> About page, after you hit Cmd/Ctrl+D shortcut.

I have no access to this application anymore. Thus, I can't view this log either.

Please paste the text from config.json here, you probably made some mistake while editing it. It should be located similar to: C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Stretchly

This is my log. I tried to exclude Zoom and Microsoft Teams using the instructions. However, re-installing it, I thought that this log would be resetted... Apparently that is not the case. I couldn't open this .json file at first, so I opened it with windows wordpad. Maybe that is the cause of the issue?

Hi @Yaminos ,

this is called "config" not "log". Config file is where Stretchly stores the Preferences.

What you have for exclusions is, and it does not look correct:

"appExclusions": [
{
]
}],

As I mention here (https://github.com/hovancik/stretchly#advanced-preferences) it is good idea to close Stretchly first and before trying and saving the new changes check the file with some formater, let's say https://jsonformatter.curiousconcept.com/

I can see that you are missing { }. The file should be like:

{
"microbreakDuration":20000,
"microbreakInterval":600000,
.....
}

I have fixed the error for you by removing content of appExclusions

Dear Jan, thanks for the help. Stretchly works properly again and Teams and Zoom are excluded. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy this app!
