Another topic I would like to write a chapter on: https://twitter.com/getify/status/1163829839410974722

I imagine a lot of devs are primarily asked to build things that are mostly relatively straightforward adaptations/combinations of existing things. This must be a delight!

I almost never do that.

What I build is usually custom and the first time it's ever been done. Which is also a delight of a different sort! I find it incredibly rewarding -- through all the challenge and struggle.

Pretty sure that if you spend most of your time in the first camp, it's hard to understand/appreciate work from the second. And definitely vice versa.

I wish I was better at empathizing with the first camp. But I'm just so conditioned against that way of approaching work.

What I keep pondering is, how could we increase lines of communication, respect, and empathy between these two very different camps?

What sorts of work do you think direct you towards one of these two categories? In open-source I find that my work is sometimes monotonously routine, a lot of the interesting innovation happens early on in an open-source project, followed by long-term maintenance.
