Have an extra tab for favorite items. Users can just star any item from any tab to get it there. It would act like a shortcut tab to things you are using most often so you wouldn't have to search for them every time.

There could be a star behind every item you could tick to make it appear in the favorites (unticking it there would make it go away).
This way you could add grass, roads, fences or other very often used thing there for easier access.
