This paper contains a literature study with 212 publications on live programming, exploratory programming and live coding. The study concentrates on motivation for liveness, application domains, intended outcomes of a running system and types of contributions. Exploratory Programming: mostly about technical design and empirical studies on tools for general-purpose programming. Live Coding: most variety in motivations and methodologies, majority empirical studies with users. Mostly performance art (e.g. music). Live Programming: making programming more accessible for learning and teaching.
