update: Mostly done now... just needs a final review 😃

@hpk42 cool. Thanks for the quick review. I'll include your proposals. all make sense to me.

I consider this PR mostly done. It still lacks a few things though:

checking for key expiry, revocation etc. (not sure where to do this best)
handling gossip keys properly (which we don't do yet in the rest of the codebase)
