I think good to keep the basic 3 panel stucture of the original

For the minimal example - should we keep as a separate figure? I think we will have to unless we can make it much more compact than at present. RIght now it is quite large and hard to work out how to scale well on a US letter size page while keeping text large enough to be legible - as a separate figure, let alone a panel. Part of the problem is that circles for nodes are inefficient for text.

Suggest: reformat to looks ~like the OAKLIB generated reporting figures with nodes as rectangles with rounded corners. Text should not be smaller than 10pt + black better than white. Wrap boxes to text size (as with OAKLIB).
