choppy sound when using G.729 codec #1309

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure CSipSImple to use G.729 codec.
2. Make a phone call.
3. Make sure that G.729 is actually being used (tap info on the in-call screen).

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Sound should be clear with no cuts.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
CSipSimple nightly 0.02-03 r1032 on Samsung Galaxy S2 running Android 2.3.5
(XXKI3 firmware)

Please provide any additional information below.
There are no issues when using PCMA or PCMU codecs.
I have run the tests through WiFi (results might be far worse on 3G/EDGE/GPRS)
though G.729 is supposed to provide better quality while using less data.

The sound is a little distorted, but not too much. It is rather choppy with
cuts.

I have the same problem on htc wildfire s 2.3.3. G729 outgoing voice choppy
with cuts. Incoming voice is good. Tried with different settings. Same result.
On 3g the incoming voice is still very good but the quality of outgoing seems
to vary little more. Could be related to network but 3g/4g coverage is mostly
very good where I tested.

I tested my 3g/4g upload and download speeds and latency.
I tested at different locations and I never got any upload speed lower than 350
kbps. Download speed was always much higher. Latency varied a lot: from 90 to
500ms...
What could be causing that choppiness in my outgoing voice? The latency?

About g729, if you know can you specify the sip provider or sip server on the
other side.
It appears that some servers are buggy and does not respect the ptime sent by
csipsimple for g729. This ptime may allow to have lower latency but not all
media server respect that, and in this case you get a very very choppy outgoing
sound -while on the other way, csipsimple is able to decode flawlessly because
it actually correctly interprets the ptime value-.

If the server use real G729 not cracked one then there is just christal clear
sounds I m testing with my ZTE BLADE and I feel better sound qualilty then
mobile phone :) also important from the termination provider side must to have
good quality routing codec converting is also important
