(Being poor at English…)
I'm not an expert so I can't tell what would be the most typographically sound solution. One technique I've seen in many fonts (e.g. Junicode, Linux Libertine, Vollkorn) is to introduce an alternative “short f” glyph to use in sequences like these.
ꬵěꬵèꬵǒꬵòꬵǎꬵà(弱f)
?
Arguably these aren't extremely common pairs—fà fè fò fǎ fě fǒ occur in pinyin which is where I noticed it—but e.g. fè occurs also in French. All these pairs have the same problem in italic too.
