### Name of my software/tool/service/technology/project :
#### Nekocap
### Explain why it's a Humane Technology: NekoCap is an extension+webapp for crowdsourcing subtitles and captions. Use cases range from adding textual support for educational content, to stylised lyrics on J-Pop music videos, yet to support HoH/Deaf internet users. A Humane Tech, insofar as making the web more Accessible and more International.
### Sourcecode is available at : https://github.com/nopol10/nekocap
### Is there a similar software/tool etc., that already exists?
Yes : The closest, **still-active** project for community subtitling/captioning is [Amara](https://amara.org/en/). Formerly open-source, [Amara went closed source](https://news.slashdot.org/story/20/01/18/1753246/another-project-goes-private-amara-stops-being-developed-as-open-source) last year. Amara is also limited to YouTube, and partners such as [TedX](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wBZupNSmR0). Conversely, Nekocap is being developed as an open-source, strictly non-profit, project not only targeting YouTube but newer video sites such as BiliBili. Additionally, Nekocap places an emphasis on stylisation and rendering formatted subtitles.
### Add any other topic/section here you wish to explain and elaborate
In 2020, YouTube [removed their community captions feature](https://datahorde.org/a-history-of-youtubes-closed-captions-part-iv-downfall/) which allowed users to upload captions or subtitles to other channels. Consequently, users were now left at the mercy of automatic captions, if available at all, or referred to Amara as a potential alternative.
Nekocap is one of few alternative [caption/subtitle crowdsourcing projects](https://datahorde.org/projects/the-youtube-captioners-toolkit/) to survive into 2021, with other options shutting down or pursuing paid business models, standing as a last open-source bastion of Accessibility and Internationalisation.
