Since 2012 Human Made has been working on HMCMB for both ourselves and the community. The plugin was forked from the original Custom Meta Boxes framework by Jared Atchinson so that we could add additions of our own that better matched our clients.
We’ve enjoyed working on HMCMB, but all good things must come to an end. We’re in a time of ubiquity for ways to customize your website and a time with too many options for adding meta boxes. As a team, we’ve reached the conclusion that to move forward with HMCMB we would need to re-write it from the ground up which would add yet another meta-boxes rewrite to an already full eco-system of plugins.
In the interest of consolidating effort and support we’ve decided to move our development efforts and time into CMB2 instead of continuing to maintain HMCMB. CMB2 is an excellent meta-boxes framework with a wonderful UI created by Justin Sternberg and supported by WebDevStudios and Zao. It is robust, well-maintained, and used on hundreds of thousands of sites already. The API is very similar to HMCMB with even more features so developing with it should feel very familiar.
We are sunsetting HMCMB with version 1.1. We intend to fix any serious bugs that are found but will not be adding any new features or enhancements to the codebase. In the meantime, we will be closing any Issues that are not related to bugs. The ideas that people have taken the time to request are excellent and appreciated, but it’s best to direct as much effort as possible into a framework that will continue on.
Thank you for taking the time to use, develop on, develop with, and enhance HMCMB. We look forward to seeing you join us over at CMB2
