It seems that in some cases we have references for the sample groups (such as for geoarchaeology), but not the datasets. And in other cases we have references for the datasets but not the sample groups (e.g. dendro).
As I understand it, these two are pretty much always the same, so whatever reference is set for the sample groups in geoarchaeology should also be set for the datasets, and vice versa for dendro.
If this is true, then I think this is best fixed in the database, rather than implementing a hacky logic around it in the client.
