Is the way that I am approaching this okay (passing in external_id)?

@NuckChorris can you check if the approach I am taking so far is ok? (ignoring the soulless demons comments)

Considering a copy PR of this got merged into server and it won't do much on this repo anymore anyways, I guess this can be closed. Yell if I was wrong.
