The splash screen is a painting done by John Collier in 1892 which means that it's a public domain work of art that can be used free of charge.
This isn't the first time somebody complained about it, either.
I'm a software developer, not an artist. Therefore I won't be able to create a sufficiently chaste splash screen myself - and I certainly won't pay an artist for one. I have to admit that I considered hiding her breasts behind a machine gun but decided against it.
According to legend, Lilith was Adams first wive before she left him and he married Eve instead. And they didn't wear clothes in paradise before eating that fruit...
What I'm trying to say is this: art isn't pornography and I won't remove this piece of art from Lilith.
You have several options, though:
Thanks for this issue. It gave me the chance to clarify my position about this topic once and for all.
p.s. It's actually possible to use Lilith in a professional environment. Just not in a mastrophobic one.
I totally see your point and even like the image very much from my private point of view, i.e. I think it's really beautiful. Thanks for pointing out the preference options, that helps me continue to use it in my large office, where a lot of people can see my screen. Nevertheless I cannot promote lilith to other developers until a less offensive image made it to the splashscreen. I could fork myself, your absolutly right, but I won't do that. I attach a plain simple image soon, that I would prefer, even though it will be only text.
PS: I like the machine gun idea! >:D
Here is my suggestion for a new splash screen. Created with gimp. Feel free to do what you want with it (further editing etc.).
I cannot add the gimp original source xcf and don't find a contact possibility here. How can I send you the source image?
It is art, but it makes it difficult to suggest for use to my corporate customers and high school robotics team I mentor.
Art or not, it's not appropriate for a North American corporate IT environment. Wouldn't be appropriate in India either. I can't use this at my work.
Is an artistic splash screen more important than adoption outside of Europe?

Yepp.
Wonder how the romans did survive with all this naked marble statues - gosh, they were even showing male genitals. :scream:
At the end, this is Github: Create a fork, remove the picture, and handle the upstream changes. That's it.
@huxi In my opinion, liberty of expression is the liberty which sustains all the others. As such, I would encourage you to keep the splash screen as is. Moreover, you have presented options for disabling the splash.
I want to promote lilith in my company, but don't think I can do that until the splash screen contains naked niples. Nice picture for private use, but it prevents from using lilith in professional environments...
