Default picture in notification

Notifications without a picture/icon that be found should display the generic 
app icon rather than a blank icon. 

I'm thinking of Gmail here (but it may apply to other apps). Or create an icon 
in such cases, like Gmail 4.5 does (coloured tile with the initial of sender)

Unfortunately I can't help with that. GMail provides a generic icon for unknown 
contacts but NiLS cannot know its generic, it looks like any other contact 
image.
The only way to make NiLS do this is to provide it access to gmail and contacts 
and let it scan the emails and see which emails are coming from unknown 
contacts, but I don't want to do this - I want to keep NiLS as clean as 
possible from those permissions.
Maybe later with a plugin mechanism for NiLS it will be possible by 3rd party 
app.

Ah I see.  How about an app option to ALWAYS display simply the app icon? So 
for Gmail it would never display the contact picture? I think I'd prefer that 
over the blank icons as so many of my contacts don't have pictures anyway
