That's a "feature" in 10.8 (Mountain Lion). For now you can follow http://www.imore.com/how-open-apps-unidentified-developer-os-x-mountain-lion to bypass that.
We're going to look into purchasing a code signing certificate, because we need it for Windows as well.
In the meantime, would it make sense to include that info in a README file?
I just wouldn't want someone to get as far as downloading it, then getting stuck on the install. (I imagine a parent all excited to show their kid some cool programming stuff. The kid is sitting there eyes rolling. "Well, it just takes a bit to download it, then we'll be off to the races". Then they hit a brick wall when they can't install. )
Just a few hints at what to do, and a link to that post would have helped me. I can take a stab at writing it up if you want.
It may make more sense to put it on the download page due to the download itself is only an executable and would be easier to notice.
Just submitted https://github.com/hybridgroup/kidsruby-site/pull/4
awesome
Can we close this now that we have the warning and create a signing ticket separately because it's not just for OSX.
Sure, go ahead.
When I tried to install KidsRuby, by running KidsRubyInstaller.app (downloaded today. 1.3 version), I get the error "KidsRuby can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer", and a dialog that would not let me move forward.
I had to google around until I could find some info on it, this page was helpful http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1324950.html
My solution was to right click and 'open' the app, instead of double clicking it. You get the same warning, but the dialog will let you proceed with the installer.
