how do you two feel about the commit history? Is there any room for some cleanup, or do you feel all of the commits are significant enough that they should stand on their own?

There's probably room for clean up. However, if I'm honest, I'm not sure what value that would add for the trouble of rewriting history. I'm open to being persuaded otherwise.
