These funny cases need handling when loc is spatial, rather than being a lon-lat pair:

[x] a single point, because no extent
[x] a raster extent, because no crs (assume lonlat if reasonable, with a warning - don't assume it's mercator)
[x] any object without a crs (do the same as extent, assume lonlat if couldBeLonLat() with a warning
[x] buffer set explicitly to 0 or lower
