OTF Grant Application #170

Open writerly03 opened 6 months ago

writerly03 commented 6 months ago

An issue to track the progress of the OTF grant application. Meeting notes from initial conversation with Remy from OTF are here: https://hackmd.io/px9OBb86RiCXS_tNW_wSww

Also see issue #125 for more context on grant applications and funding.

@RangerMauve can you jot down some ideas for the general OTF grant? In the last meeting, we'd discussed it was something like:

Might be helpful to skim the FAQ

Note that the size of the project needs to be:

Minimum of $10,000 and maximum of $900,000 for a year-long contract. Note, however, that OTF’s target support ceiling is $300,000; most supported efforts receive between $50,000 and $200,000.

Funds are distributed as contracts, not grants. They don't permit any funding for overhead(!)

I think there's a few bits we can try to tackle. We can use a subset off them if they make sense. I think a major question for each would be "who is this for?" to try to get as partners. Big Q is whether this'd be useful for Sutty and their networks.

Are there things from the UX workshops we should be learning from to add here?

sutty-coop commented 6 months ago

I'd ask @fauno to complete this issue commenting his POV and what Mauve asked up here ☝ (or craft an answer along with UX team)

I think we'd need to find at least an org that needs this use case, maybe DD? Our friends at Escuela Común would love something like this.

As for Jekyll on a smartphone, I'd love to see that but I haven't used ruby.wasm (or artichoke, which promises to compile to wasm too) and wouldn't want to commit to stress over a super experimental technology we can't fix ourselves. I mean, we would need a proof of concept that we can really do this.

It'd also mean porting the CMS to wasm!

A step before that would be to turn every smartphone into a walking Sutty+DP node. I imagine you connect your app to the DP API and download websites. Then you can take your phone to an offline location and provide access to these websites and share them with other devices. So you don't necessarily publish your stuff, but help disseminate important information.

There are similar projects out there we could ally with, too.

Developing apps is hard! Specially running background services, where the phone can decide to turn it off at any time to save energy, and you have to add an uncancelable notification to avoid this. If possible, I'd use something web based, and it comes with its own set of limitations and workarounds.

RangerMauve commented 5 months ago

Yeah a mobile node sounds good. What about something like this:

Using a p2p web app would mean we could support both mobile and desktop.

I think an important part would be the framing of "Our research shows link rot is a problem and this puts data storage and sharing into the hands of people"

We could go with making separate mobile apps, but rendering pages of pinned sites might be harder to do and then we'd be lacking on desktop.

Future work could be to use bridges within http-only browsers.

Does this seem promising? I also agree that partnering with an org could be good. Would sutty working with some sort of activist groups locally be possble?

Notes for the funding guide: Project must fit into one of the following 4 focus areas:

Access, awareness, privacy, and security.

OTF is a two-stage process. We have to submit an expression of interest and then if it's approved, we can submit an application. I've started a hackmd pad with the questions here: https://hackmd.io/tYdaSjJLTi2jwY8KTF5Alw?edit

(I have some trepidation about doing this in a hackmd pad, but I'm gonna try it since it's the preferred tool for you all :)

sutty-coop commented 5 months ago

Andi mentions that her goal is to get this into reasonable shape in the next two weeks with the aim of submitting in the first week of July

Hi @akhileshthite and @fauno ! Can you set aside some time today or tomorrow to review the HackMD and add some missing information? https://hackmd.io/tYdaSjJLTi2jwY8KTF5Alw?view @writerly03 had the idea of submitting it this week, but she needs our help to nourish the application. There are a few places where she asks for specific input

fauno commented 4 months ago

I'll do it tomorrow! I said last meeting that it'd be great to have the UX research results and talk with Laboratorio de Medios about possible use cases, since OTF favors this (but doesn't fund research, only implementation)

OK, we're in the final stretch for this application (or so I hope). To-dos are below:
