Integrate with Notetaking and Archiving Software #146

Open JakeHartnell opened 9 years ago

JakeHartnell commented 9 years ago

As a user, I would like my annotations to sync with my notetaking application so that I can have all my notes, highlights, and annotations in one place.

A few of our users (notably @rdhyee) have requested integration with software such as Evernote. This makes sense, because one of the main purposes of annotation is personal notetaking; remembering important quotes, writing down thoughts on research, etc. We could provide a lot of value to users by giving them an easy way to sync their annotations with their notebooks.

Evernote is one prominent example, but this epic is meant to be a stub to cover other similar services such as OneNote.

Thanks, @RawKStar77, for posting this issue.

I would like to add Laverna ("Open source alternative to Evernote") and Zotero ("Collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources", open source) to the list.

@pguth, thanks! Can you describe how you'd like an integration with these two apps to function? With Laverna it doesn't appear that there are user accounts? And with Zotero, this is one we've thought of, but I'm curious how others imagine and integration working.

Agree.

Our 2 cents on it:

The question is: What is the core task users want to do with their integrations? They want to transfer the content of their notes to another application to further process it. It might be that we can accomplish the result of an integration with a work around and would cover a multitude of different apps at the same time.

How?

Integrating a copy-to-clipboard button to every annotation-entry As a first step we could just make this easier in making it possible to copy the content of a note to the clipboard.

This would allow the user at least to copy a desired note somewhere with 2,5 clicks (copy, cmd+v)

User Stories

These are backed up by conducting around 40 user interviews with skeptics, journalists, scientists and students.

  1. Mark is a skeptic and often debates on the web, he has a vast collection of links and prewritten comments he uses to save up time while debating commonly known arguments. He just wants to have an easy way to copy&paste their content without bulkily selecting the annotation and the comment in the sidebar.
  2. Mark also writes a blog post from time to time, whenever he needs a quote he saved up from another place, he has to go through the same bulky process mentioned in point 1
  3. Mark wants to save a quote etc to Evernote or other applications. In comparison to saving it to Evernote, with a copy button there is only 1 more click to reach the (almost) same result. Almost because what is missing is the link to the article saved to Evernote Meta-Data.
