Annotating an SVG in an HTML document may already work. Annotating that SVG, or any SVG document itself, is not necessarily possible. Just testing here in Firefox, it doesn't even seem like the browser makes a request to a load a dynamically inserted script element.
How difficult would it be for hypothesis to support SVG? Anchoring annotations to parts of an image may be challenging, in general, but given the structure of the SVG format, it might work.
This SVG is actually an interactive slideshow about annotations (and even meta-annotations). Annotating its textual content through hypothesis could make for interesting interactions (while augmenting its “levels of meta”). In addition, ”tagging” visual objects could enhance the collaborative process involved in group/public annotations.
