Description

The cursor changes size when hovering over some of the windows. I definitely noticed this when working with GIMP. For example, if I use a cursor of size 20, it becomes a size of 25 if I move the cursor to the window with GIMP. Unfortunately, I can’t attach a screenshot because the program removes the cursor from the image.

How to reproduce

I don't know if this is related to the installation of the HyDE config, but I think not. I think this is a Wayland bug.

This is just Gnome being Gnome. You have to configure Gtk by running gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface cursor-theme [theme] and gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface cursor-size [size]. IIRC, Hyprland 0.42 does it for you if you have your XCURSOR_SIZE and XCURSOR_THEME configured.

For GIMP, if you're still running GIMP 2.10.x, you have to set up your Gtk2 config as well.

I also experience this on 01ff5fdf6a00a9231bd3b56400d8bcab378c4257, I've tried to check older commits, but even 0.42.0 release has this (which it shouldn't, because it worked fine for me when it came out), I also tried to downgrade aquamarine to corresponding to 0.42.0 release, and it's somehow still bigger when hovering over waybar/firefox than swaybg.

Didn't look into further yet.

This is not a solution, but a clue to the devs why it might be happening. There already was a similar issue recently, and it came down to one small commit https://github.com/hyprwm/Hyprland/issues/7162#issuecomment-2267632531 , it might be that something very similar gone missing recently elsewhere / was not completely fixed and now we just hitting a different branch in logic for scales above 1, etc.

It should be investigated, not brushed under the rug.

i think if im not wrong since the last gsettings syncing and gtk being client sided rendering. it applies its own scaling ontop of the set gsettings cursor_size, so if we set XCURSOR_SIZE 24, scale 2. we render a size 48 xcursor server sided, sync gsettings to cursor_size 48, only it applies 48 * 2 yet again. so just gotta change the gsettings syncing to reduce the size with the monitor scale if a scale isnt 1 and it should somewhat pair up. noticed xwayland also needs a bit of scaling figuring out too

short term workaround would be to set cursor:sync_gsettings_theme = false, and manually set it to proper size until fix lands in repo if you want to scale your monitor and not have mismatched cursors

yeah prototyping some fix. only i hit some struggles with xwayland cursor also being broken on scaling. but im working on it :P

Got the same problem - in some apps I'm getting 36-48 adwaita, instead of 24 catppuccin. Setting the cursor in nwg-look fixes the issue, but I have to set it every boot. All I can say it's a regression, bc it worked fine a month ago
