Description

When in full screen and exclusive mode, vmware workstation fails to cover the entire display. There's a sliver of black on the bottom (approx. 8 pixels) and the image is compressed/squished vertically. Rows of pixels go missing throughout the image due to the (lack of) resampling. This causes a magic mirror effect that is noticeable on text and the mouse cursor.

The regular non-exclusive full screen mode works correctly.

How to reproduce

  1. Open vmware workstation
  2. Install and boot a virtual machine. I use a windows 10 one but I assume any would do as long as it can be made aware of the host display resolution
  3. view->fullscreen, press control+alt to release focus
  4. view->exclusive mode, enter exclusive mode

This is me performing the reproduction steps (and disabling logging afterwards).

Unfortunately the issue does not seem to be visible on recordings or in screenshots.

No, as far as I know this is a 1080p display at 100% with no dpi scaling variables set anywhere. But the log does mention creating dmabufs of 1920x1088. I don't know if that's normal.

Maybe! I can't reproduce it with gnome shell or nested kwin, but I can with gamescope -w 1920 -h 1080 -W 1920 -H 1080 -f --force-windows-fullscreen vmware.
