Thought I would try your latest update but still not working. Was running 54491 release before the update. It was challenging to get the router back to life after attempting the update. Then after many attempts I installed decrypted 120b3 and then your 54491 release. Should I say Go Oilers Go or would that identify me as a Flames fan.

Cheers!!

i3roly commented 4 months ago

it’s probably because i forgot to add the xz decompression switch since assfuck updated the squashfs and i think it requires it.

i’ll spin a new build right now and let you know what’s up. thanks for the info i’ll pull the commit

Thanks, Gagan

yea that was the issue i'll have another build up in an half an hour or so, hopefully.

let me know how it works at that time. computer is shit these days.

i3roly commented 4 months ago

i screwed up the modules directory name in my script, so it'll be tomorrow morning cause i'm goingto bed now lol. it works though i tested it. just noticed the modules directory wasn't updating the name properly due to the longer string (openela) which was longer than my cut macro

i3roly commented 4 months ago

done. tested and working.

CastleCaptain commented 4 months ago

Excellent, thank you. I will give it a try this evening.

Well, that release does not work for me. DIR3040. Router is cycling between power on and off.

until i can get my hands on a 3040 at a good price, i can’t help unfortunately.

but i’m pretty sure it should/does work because i didn’t change anything in terms of file structure or booting.

and i doubt a new kernel would cause an issue here.

last time i had an issue like you did, but it wasn’t exactly how you described it. it did have issues and no webgui, and it was a lost change in httpd that busted up the entire init process.

i have attached another image where the filesystem uses the old squashfs, just so you can report back. it's possible the nand can't tolerate the new squashfs compression or something, since the 882 has an SPI.

i dunno which version you use but here's both and just let me know when you got them so ican delete them: https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/049G1cxZG-mFyvbk95v_Zu7pA#factory-to-ddwrt-SE https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/03d4s7eVri8e7KkKiWz1803WQ#dlink-dir-3040-a1-webflash

in short, and i'm sorry to say this because i don't have one of these routers (yet), i have to say it may be user error this time. it really should work. Screen Shot 2024-06-05 at 5 11 45 PM

i3roly commented 4 months ago

oh i forgot to mention, it's possible using that last release busted up your nvram lol but i'm not certain about this. if you restored and older version and everything is fine, then a reset isn't needed.

but really man it should work. i can't see how updating some apps like unbound etc would cause a failed post if 56197 worked

CastleCaptain commented 4 months ago

Doesn't make sense if that all the update was. But, please know I have not been able to use your version since release 54491.

Anyhow, if you are interested Dlink Canada still has refurbished units at C$80.

thought you closed ticket #24 because the one after 54491 worked? Sent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone on the Rogers network.

edit: also i just don't want to buy another router i can't use right now. if i needed another router, i'd definitely buy it. a little preoccupied with my firefox stuff at this time too. you should learn to solder lol and givem e serial logs

@CastleCaptain wanna try this build for me and see if it fixes the problem? i've increased the size of the flash partitions in the dts because it's possible that it was too close and possibly causing problems.

Gagan,

Thanks for continuing to try to get a working version of your firmware for the 3040. However, no dice, the router would not boot and keeps cycling on and off like before. Also, it took trying three different browsers and multiple attempts to get the recovery process to initiate. I am back at 54491 now. Kirk

thanks.

regarding your recovery firmware situation: that shouldn’t be affected by this firmware.

the recovery mode is completely set up in the u-boot, which i do not touch at all.

so that experience is separate from the firmware. i’ve never had a problem getting recovery mode even when i tried other builds on these routers.

i just held the reset button until the orange light flashed and it was fine after blinking.

do you use manual or dhcp for recovery mode? i use 192.168.0.1 as the router, 192.168.0.101 as the host and usually it’s never a problem.

Thanks, Gagan

I use a manual IPV4 setting like you but have tried .2 and .50 as well as .101. I also disable IPV6 just in case. This recovery behaviour when trying to install your firmware after 54491 is not unique to this 3040 but also to the one that I have in Calgary. Always a sigh of relief when the update progress finally initiates.

i dunno why it’s so weird for you.

are there other cables connected when you’re doing it?

i have only done recovery mode with one ethernet cable attached in port 1 with the settings described below.

never a problme. even when i had to flash tens of times in a single day to get the firmware running

Thanks, Gagan

I dunno either why the recovery behavior is not as advertised.

When trying to do a recovery I only have one cable connecting it to my laptop. The only thing that is perhaps different is that I am using an old ethernet to usb adaptor for the connection. Perhaps that is it but after loading the unencrypted Dlink firmware the next recovery load from factory to DD-WRT works jwithout issue.

the usb might be an issue because the router does ’sniff’ for the client after in recovery mode.

i would also recommend holding the reset button prior to turning the router on, if you’re already not.

the other issue is that when you write a new firmware, it will write it to the other partition as a ‘back up’ of sorts after flashing.

so that may interfere, but if you hold the reset button right before powering it on, it shouldn’t be a problem.

dunno. hopefully i find a 3040 or 2640 on the cheap soon or someone gets me a serial log. Thanks, Gagan

Always a sigh of relief when the update progress finally initiates.

regarding your recovery firmware situation: that shouldn’t be affected by this firmware.

the recovery mode is completely set up in the u-boot, which i do not touch at all.

so that experience is separate from the firmware. i’ve never had a problem getting recovery mode even when i tried other builds on these routers.

i just held the reset button until the orange light flashed and it was fine after blinking.

do you use manual or dhcp for recovery mode? i use 192.168.0.1 as the router, 192.168.0.101 as the host and usually it’s never a problem.

Thanks, Gagan

Thanks for continuing to try to get a working version of your firmware for the 3040. However, no dice, the router would not boot and keeps cycling on and off like before. Also, it took trying three different browsers and multiple attempts to get the recovery process to initiate. I am back at 54491 now. Kirk

Serial log??

i would also recommend holding the reset button prior to turning the router on, if you’re already not.

the other issue is that when you write a new firmware, it will write it to the other partition as a ‘back up’ of sorts after flashing.

so that may interfere, but if you hold the reset button right before powering it on, it shouldn’t be a problem.

dunno. hopefully i find a 3040 or 2640 on the cheap soon or someone gets me a serial log. Thanks, Gagan

When trying to do a recovery I only have one cable connecting it to my laptop. The only thing that is perhaps different is that I am using an old ethernet to usb adaptor for the connection. Perhaps that is it but after loading the unencrypted Dlink firmware the next recovery load from factory to DD-WRT works jwithout issue.

rs232

google the ttl-232r-rpi to get an idea.

it’s a uart to usb cable with 3 or 4 pins. you solder a 4 pin header to the router, there’s a spot for it, and then you connect to it using that cable

you can then get the full boot log via a serial terminal haha

Thanks, Gagan

wanna try this build? i got a log from someone on the openwrt forums that showed me the rootfs wasn't being detected. and so i know where the problem is.

they since flashed openwrt so i may not get another log from them lol.

https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/052RhN3nYOwrwtzVLGfqYno-g#factory-to-ddwrt-SE

it should work. it seems to be an alignment issue which is why it'd loop. the kernel boots fine. it's just not seeing the full rootfs because the end of file marker isn't detected, meaning it can't see the full size.

CastleCaptain commented 4 months ago

There is only the factory-to-ddwrt-SE file in your icloud link. I am assuming that I need to do that first and cannot directly do a webflash file update. Is that correct?

I should ask the question -- do I need to do the factory-to-ddwrt first before the webflash? The router is currently running on your 54491 release.

no, that was just in case you wanted to use recovery mode.

but you know what, don’t try it lol. i think the differences between the latest build and the one you’re running aren’t worth any potential mental anguish of trying to get into recovery mode.

we’ll see if george on openwrt’s forums is feeling nice and flashes a second time to get me another log.

it should work. it seems to be an alignment issue which is why it'd loop. the kernel boots fine. it's just not seeing the full rootfs because the end of file marker isn't detected, meaning it can't see the full size.

No go. Tried the webflash first but the router stopped working after the upgrade with the lights flashing alternately between the orange power led and the three white radio leds. Then tried recovery mode with the factory to ddwrt file and at at about 75% upgrade the router exhibited the same led behavior.

i don’t understand why you’d use the recovery firmware and the weblash

you don’t do it twice. you use one depending on where you’re at.

are you sure that your experience was from the firmware in the most recent link, and the one before that?

it should work. from what i saw in george’s log it was an issue of having too many splits.

Thanks, Gagan

I did the webflash from a working version of 54491. When that update failed I tried the factory to ddwrt recovery which also did not work. I am confident that I was using the latest files.

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/a43bdc376deab5fff1ceb93dca55bcab8dbdc1d6

i think i found the problem. they added this to fix some other issue, but i never use gluebi and ftd as a module. and it seems this would prevent a ubi block device from registering like it used to.

this change was added precisely after 54491 and the first build that came after it, which you said didn't work.

wanna try the attached build and see if it works? it would be the only possible explanation for why it didn't boot for you, because i am 100% positive the logs george gave me and what i have from a few years ago are 100% identical, except for the fact that at the end of george's log it never mounted the ubi like it's supposed to.

this would be an explanation as to why. https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/05biY-Uir0lTC90rPHCRfaZbg#dlink-dir-3040-a1-webflash https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/080xB1MUrVB_f03pdCYH7CuXg#factory-to-ddwrt-SE

Hurrah!! Just did the webflash update and it works.

Thank you for your persistence on this issue. Much appreciated and if I may note your firmware for this router is so much better than the alternatives, stock or otherwise.

will you be able to try another build for me shortly here lol. i want to see if disabling one feature will still result in a proper boot.

CastleCaptain commented 4 months ago

Sure, no probs. I assume I can flash it from the 56898 build currently running??

yeah

i’ll let you know once i get an answer from the linux kernel guys as to what the hell is going on.

turns out i may have enabled one option too many. but even if i did, it shouldn’t cause the failed boot like you experienced on the last flash (the ones previous to the most recent failed flash were for other reasons).

Thanks, Gagan

have the factory-to-ddwrt ready from the build i posted, just in case.

hopefully you don't need it.

this is the guy you need to try via webflash:

https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/028C6isKPjxQF85bEDGP58m6w#dlink-dir-3040-a1-webflash

if it doesn't work then don't worry about it. i was just trying to perform the boot without CONFIG_MTD_GLUEBI enabled.

if it doesn't work then i'll just keep doing what worked for the last build.

CastleCaptain commented 4 months ago

Update went very smoothly and I am now running 56932.

i meant to delete yours to protect your info, thanks for that stuff.

damn i forgot dmesg doesn't give you the whole log.

does cat /var/log/messages show you the beginning of the boot? i wanted to see the linux stuff. pretty much everything before what you pasted lol.

cat /var/log/messages did not yield any output. You should know that I am using these as wireless access points to extend the wireless range.

it’s fine. so i guess you like the STA/Client mode feature? it’s pretty cool. shame i have no use for most of the features.

you live on an acreage or something?

lmk if everything is good. check the temperatures in system info to ensure they show up. assfuck decided to fuck around and make some "tweaks".

broadCRAP is really riding his ass these past few weeks. i've never seen him work so hard to make such garbage look good, and i bet it's all for naught anyways. can't turn a frog (ARM) into a prince (proper ISA).

the funniest is when he hacked at musl (a c library) to make things work for ARM. that's how you know an architecture is trash. but hey, broadcrap pays his bills so he does as they say.

lmk if everything is good. check the temperatures in system info to ensure they show up. assfuck decided to fuck around and make some "tweaks".

broadCRAP is really riding his ass these past few weeks. i've never seen him work so hard to make such garbage look good, and i bet it's all for naught anyways. can't turn a frog (ARM) into a prince (proper ISA).

the funniest is when he hacked at musl (a c library) to make things work for ARM. that's how you know an architecture is trash. but hey, broadcrap pays his bills so he does as they say.

Gagan,

All is good with the release as far as the unit restarting and the radios restarting. DD-WRT v4.14-r57595M CRISPIN (07/26/24).
