Router times out on few menu's DIR-882 #3

So ive been using your build for quite a while and it has mostly been great. but recently i have been facing 2 issues from the last two builds. (i dont know before that because i was using the stock dlink firmware briefly)

When I go to the status page, select any option, the router times out.

it starts with this

user err Caught SIGSEGV (11) in strlen user err Fault at memory location 0x00000000 due to address not mapped to object (1).

and ends with httpd crashing and restarting after a while. but again crashing on status page.

I have attached my log. i was on the v47111 build but updated to v47143 but same error. It could be an unconnected error but a few apps like whatsapp disconnect from the internet. while rest of the phone has connectivity (both iphone and android).

it starts when this error comes

Hi

The portsecured issue is known but there is no fix currently available.

This is not really an error. It's something to do with protected management frames and the mediatek driver. This is not exclusive to my build. Rather, it applies to all users of the driver.

Regarding the status issue: thanks. I'll fix that later today.

update: i cannot reproduce your issue. i am sorry, but from my perspective this is not a bug because frankly the error you're showing is impossible (really, and i rarely say something like this). the only way this could happen is if you changed the nvram variables "wl0_ifname" and "wl1_ifname"

i'll note that the crash you're showing is httpd allegedly failing to parse the temperature from the iwpriv output of the mt_wifi driver, and i could not reproduce that in the latest build.

personally, i feel it's impossible to have this error because:

  1. you can only get temperature via iwpriv and httpd calls it in a specific way
  2. i have tested the latest httpd and, as the screenshot shows, the temperature is retrieved no problem.

unless you change wl0_ifname (which should be ra0) and wl1_ifname (which should be rai0), then this should not happen.

i recommend you either change them to the defaults, or just don't use the build lol. sorry i can't be of more help Screenshot 2021-08-10 at 11 22 11 AM

I can't load the status page either actually. I get this in the logs when I click on status tab:

The page never loads and I think httpd restarts because I cant load other pages for a bit. Happens every time I click status tab.

The page never loads and I think httpd restarts because I cant load other pages for a bit. Happens every time I click status tab.

update: i cannot reproduce your issue. i am sorry, but from my perspective this is not a bug because frankly the error you're showing is impossible (really, and i rarely say something like this). the only way this could happen is if you changed the nvram variables "wl0_ifname" and "wl1_ifname"

i'll note that the crash you're showing is httpd allegedly failing to parse the temperature from the iwpriv output of the mt_wifi driver, and i could not reproduce that in the latest build.

personally, i feel it's impossible to have this error because:

1. you can only get temperature via iwpriv and httpd calls it in a specific way

2. i have tested the latest httpd and, as the screenshot shows, the temperature is retrieved no problem.

unless you change wl0_ifname (which should be ra0) and wl1_ifname (which should be rai0), then this should not happen.

i recommend you either change them to the defaults, or just don't use the build lol. sorry i can't be of more help Screenshot 2021-08-10 at 11 22 11 AM

Not really, i was coming from stock fw/ briefly flashed openwrt but it was just poor. flashed stock to ddwrt from recovery, then flashed through webui both v47111 build, set up wifi and pppoe, and then today morning flashed the new build

an update @markolonius , like @i3roly suggested, SSH'd into the router and checked my nvRam variables with,

nvram show | grep wl0_ifname

nvram show | grep wl1_ifname

wl0_ifname was set to empty,

wl0_ifname=

and wl1_ifname was set to rai0.

wl1_ifname=rai0

so i set wl0_ifname to ra0 with

nvram set wl0_ifname="ra0" nvram commit

reboot the router and boom status page is working now.

I never touched any nvram variables, so i really don't know what happened. I wonder if any other problems i am facing is because of incorrect nvram variable.

@nikolatesluh the defaults file looks fine to be honest. can you try to reset to defaults after you save your current config, and try again? it shouldn't happen.

@i3roly i did reset defaults multiple times, including flashing stock and flashing again. didn't work, just manually set the nvram variable and it worked.

it didn't make sense to me why he had it, and it makes less sense that rai0 is fine but for some reason we need this line for ra0.

i'll reopen this ticket, but when i upload 47146, please close it if the problem is fixed after you restore from defaults.

i suspect it will be.

i almost raged out at both of you lol, but it turns out this was a good issue.

@i3roly thanks a lot man, your last build I used was when the thread was up in the DDWrt fourms but back then i had some weird issue where all the settings were reset randomly, but the time i circled between different f/w and came back, they had taken the thread down. Which is when i discovered the git and flashed v47111. Thanks for the efforts. cheers!

that was from when i used the ralink nvram, which was sometimes to slow.

yes it was prone to randomly resetting here and there. in my case i could only trigger it by restarting a lot in a short period. now we're using the broadcom nvram which is much faster, and it's designed for the ralink partitions so it doesn't add size to the firmware by creating a new partition.

@i3roly I completely restored 882 to stock and flashed back from recovery. Setting up everything again and testing took time. It seems to be fixed. funnily enough the errors with random no connectivity on apps like whatsapp was fixed the moment i had set the nvram variable ra0. All the random log errors except the 2 you said which has no fix seems to have vanished as well. Cheers man and thanks a lot.

10+ years of using dlink and they sill haven't fixed "demage"

makes me worried that other first-time users experienced this and ditched the FW.

yeah, the hanging on the httpd page would cause httpd to behave erratically.

i knew what the issue was and i wasn't surprised about everything else it was causing, because if the page doesn't load that means the daemon is 'stuck' and can't perform other functions (hence the other errors).

all in all i'm relieved it's fixed and now i have greater confidence (i hadn't flashed in over 60 days until you brought this issue forward) that people will love what they see once they flash it.

personally i've had this router for 4 years now and it seems in the past year or so it's really starting to perform well.

Quite possible, but there are hardly any references to your work since the ddwrt thread was taken down. As I knew looked it up online and I came across the git. I'll see if I can make a post in the D-Link forms.

It took me some time to figure it out as the last time I did any kind of dev work was when dir 300 was getting nightlies.

Honestly your flavour has been the most stable for me, a bit overwhelming as I'm still getting around the options. But before this I was running padavan on an mi router and that was literally set and forget.

I had no idea this router was that old. It was recently made available at an affordable price range in India so I thought I'll get a wave 2 device. The 2660 and 3040 were just priced out of proportion. I'll keep a look out of any issues if they crop up,

@nikolatesluh any issues with 47565 or later? someone is complaining.

i am on 47525 without issue. i can't see a kernel update or busybox causing a problem. i really don't want to restart my router because my box is in the middle of building a database.

could you get me some logs or something if there is an issue?

Hey, I'm on v47525 as well. its been running fine without any issues. there are some warnings and errors in the log but except a few about my local network i don't know how to interpret the rest. I have attached my logs for reference. the xx.xx, xx:xx is done by me. syslog.txt

An update, just after my last post, I updated to the latest firmware, v47608 and like the the poster on the latest issue posted, Same thing happened with me, The power light flashed orange momentarily then got completely bricked, with all lights off. I was running on v47565 before the update. After it bricked i tried to flash back with the factory to dd-wrt file, but it was still bricked. Then i did it again from an old download i had left over of version v45xxx and it worked, then i updated to v47479 bin i had lying around. As the router completely reset, took me a while to set up everything back again.
