Occasional drop of connection over hops > 2 #1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Make one device the gateway server
2. Make two or more devices intermediate servers
3. Make one device a client that connects to the nearest intermediate server.
Gateway <-> Intermediate Server 1 <-> Intermediate Server 2 <-> Intermediate 
Server 3 <-> Client

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Client communicates with the internet at all times. Occasionally the packets 
drop. This could be due to inactivity of the the intermediate devices.
