After 2 years on being on the tried and true 'paid' model, I'd like to move iComics over to the free-to-download, or 'freemium' model.
I'll go into more detail about why in a blog, but suffice it to say, going freemium lets more users try out and use the app without any initial buy-in, where they may be more inclined to pay for the app afterwards. This allows two benefits of growing the userbase more substantially, as well as (HOPEFULLY) would also increase the revenue stream (Meaning I could actually spend more time on it. :D )
What will change if I already own iComics?
Absolutely nothing! Thanks to the receipt validation feature of iOS 7, it's possible to automatically detect that the app had already been bought in the past, and will simply continue working in its fully unlocked state.
What will happen if I download iComics afterwards?
You'll be able to download and use the app off the App Store for free, but with certain limitations that can be lifted with a single in-app purchase.
What kind of limitations?
I've had a long hard think about this. Ideally, I want the free version of the app to be as enjoyable as possible, but also provide paid features that would make the paid unlock compelling enough.
To that end, I've decided that the app will provide the core reading experience for free (including organsiation in collections), and any 'bells-and-whistles' features (hotjumping, background colors etc) will be part of the paid unlock.
