Can this be merged? c.f. #96

@jamesmyatt you are right! The reason why I held off (for too long) was because I wasn't able to find a contributor that could support with the pass-through method, via the new method. But perhaps we should just link to the archive for that for now...

Given the time elapsed and that this branch has been stable for a while, I would merge it and point to the archives for anything that's not currently included.

An improved serial passthrough I think might need to wait for V3.

@jamesmyatt I just see that we now miss a README / way to start. Would you be willing to contribute here, to make sure people can easily get started.
