Let's please modify expand-collapse ques as follows:
+ and - signs should have the same width for all types of compounds (average of the widths we currently have for complexes and compounds for instance)
let's use a circle (instead of a square) for the background
let's move the ques towards the corner so it doesn't coincide with inside of the compound. if possible (if hit-testing can be done without any problems; don't bother if not straightforward!) move it so that center of the que is at upper left corner of the corresponding rectangle of the compound. If not, let's move it such that upper left corner of the cue is at the upper left corner of the corresponding rectangle of the compound. See below screenshot for an example of what I mean.
I have used the same width, average of the widths we currently have for complexes and compounds for instance, for + and - signs.
Used a circle (instead of a square) for the background.
Moved the ques towards the corner as shown in the figure attached to the above comment. However, in hit testing I am regarding them as rectangles since we needed to increase the sensitivity of these icons. Even in this case hitting these icons in minimum zoom level become hard, so I increased the sensivity of these icons from x1.5 to x2 (#124).
The following indicates the new view of expand/collapse icons.
