I read through your code for the login page and looks similar to approach I took in regards to utilizing secure PHP to communicate with back-end database resources. Maybe it's because I could not completely preview the functional applications from the code provided, but am not able to easily follow or the result that would be enumerated by the loggedinpage PHP.
Saying that though, I think I understand conceptually what you are intending for the script to do and believe that the connection and call back is all there. Maybe I am misreading but there maybe something or piece missing on how the authentication result would permit user to load this "pop-up" of successful log in. I am not sure how the footer.php fits into this scenario either. Again I am saying all of this without actually being to see a fully working mockup with UI and back-end components.
