$emailvalidate = new SMTP_validateEmail();
$emailvalidate->debug = FALSE;

$result = $emailvalidate->validate(array($email));
if (!$result[$email])

Does it happen all the time for different domains?

That is, are you use the MTA wasn't just down for a short period?

It happens all the time for any domain that I am checking.

fsockopen(), unable to connect is what I get - which in the end gives the same
effect by timing out.

This isn't working at all.

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to
d.mx.mail.yahoo.com:25 (Connection timed out) in
/lib/smtp_validateEmail.class.php on
line 154

It does emit that on all MX in array.

I am having the same problem on most addresses. Especially Gmail, AOL, Hotmail,
and Yahoo servers...

I get the same errors, and connection keeps timing out.

Script works fine for testing my own personal email on the shared server I am
using. So I know that it at least works sometimes.

Any ideas or work arounds yet?

Same issue. Confirmed we have no firewall issues. We can actually telnet from
the console alltough we can not when we do as www-data user on the console.
