Amethyst not responding #265

Open jrba opened 9 years ago

I've just run into a very annoying problem. Amethyst suddenly stopped responding and hoovering over the menu bar icon now results in endless beachballing. I can't think of any obvious reason why, no OS upgrade (still 10.9.5), no Amethyst upgrade, no reboot, no change to the permissions. Everything's still working fine on my Macbook with exactly the same OS X & Amethyst version.

Here's what I've tried so far:

After reinstalling 0.9.4, doing the permissions thingy and launching Amethyst it eventually stopped beachballing after about two minutes and I was able to change preferences but none of the shortcuts actually worked, no functionality at all. After relaunching it it was unresponsive again. I have not been able to replicate this, now it never even gets that far. I know this might not be the most helpful bug report but I don't see what else I could do to better describe it.

Hit Command+Option+Esc and tell me if there are any applications that are not responding.

jrba commented 9 years ago

None. Activity monitor says Amethyst is not responding, though.

Anything on the Console?

Aha, this is looking like something....com.fabriceleyne.menubarstatshelper constantly throws an error:

What other status bar apps do you use?

jrba commented 9 years ago

Dropbox, Google Drive, Adobe application manager, everything else in the menu bar is stock.

jrba commented 9 years ago

Ok, so....it works now. I did not do anything, just waited through ~4 minutes of beach balling since last restarting the app.

This time everything works, shortcuts, window resizing. Still the same error on the console, every 10 seconds.

ianyh commented 9 years ago

That is really weird. I don't think I have any reasonable theories as to why that might have happened.

jrba commented 9 years ago

Neither do I. I so have some non-standard things going on like SIMBL plugins to hide the menubar that might be responsible. Never caused a problem before though and still works fine on the laptop in this combination.

The error in the console seems unrelated, it keeps popping up even without Amethyst or any other menu bar app running. Fabrice Leyne appears to be the guy behind seense, the company that makes MenuBar Stats, an app that I had installed but not launched in ages. Deleted it, error persists. Eh.

Also I have since relaunched Amethyst. It took another five or so minutes of waiting but it is working again. Guess I'll just have to live with it.

Thanks for your time! Amethyst is awesome and this is the first time it ever caused me any problems. Don't think I can live without it anymore.

I'm sorry we can't figure out what's going on with Amethyst on your machine. I'll try to put in a debug mode soon so that I can get more info when things like this happen.

Glad you're liking Amethyst in general, though. I basically can't live without it either.
