What tool are you using?
ODK Collect
What is frustrating, troubling, annoying or lacking?
what3words is a universal addressing solution which makes it easy for
non-technical people to communicate precise location. By showing the what3words
address of the location in Collect, field workers can tell beneficiaries and
service provider parters the address of the location so they can say it on the
phone, write it down, refer to it and find it.
How would you like it to work?
what3words has a 3x3 metre grid of the world and has named every square with 3
words. It provides an API to translate from GPS -> 3-words and from 3-words ->
GPS in many languages (see www.what3words.com). We'd like the 3-words address
to be shown in the Record Location screen, which will require just one API call
GPS-> 3-words. See attached screenshots.
We suggest implementation would be in two steps:
1) Proof-of-concept using the online API
2) Then using the what3words offline API
NOTE: I'm working for what3words, we have a number of humanitarian
organisations using ODK who would like this feature. We would be happy to
contribute programming resources if someone can point us in the right direction.
NOTE: the core team has limited ability to make software enhancements.
We rely heavily on community-contributed enhancements to the tools. If this
is something you very much need, consider hiring a developer to make the
changes with the stipulation that they work with the core team to specify
the details of the change and contribute the change back to the project
under an Apache 2 license.
