I have tried that before, with no luck in anything but iTunes. If you know a secret to make it work globally, I'd love to know it!
I could write it as an "extended tag" in Mp3tag (I tried all combinations < com.apple.iTunes:initialkey | com.apple.iTunes:Key | INITIALKEY >), but Windows Explorer and Serato wouldn't parse them.. :/
Also, with Serato, something I noticed is that when you update the Key column on an mp4 in Serato, it writes an extended "INITIALKEY" tag to the MP4 file, that Mp3tag will parse automatically.. But, if I append that same extended tag in Mp3tag without manually editing the key column in Serato, Serato will not parse it automatically.
Serato is either just using its own database (likely) for that tag, or writing some other type of metadata or extended attribute to the file. I have no idea what Windows Explorer uses, because it works on file systems besides NTFS (ie: FAT/ExFAT) as well.
This commit https://github.com/ibsh/is_KeyFinder/commit/a5c8b8f8f17be57567df163b880abd12dcea0000 seemed to fix it for Serato and Traktor, though I didn't test it elsewhere.
Oh, and don't ask why the "----:" prefix; I have absolutely no idea!
